The goal of my research is to discover, translate, and apply new knowledge in basic and applied behavioral science to solve problems in child health and development. Specifically, my research focuses on environmental determinants of socially important behavior in typically developing young children and those with, or at risk for, autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Prior to my appointment at KU, my research primarily involved the assessment and treatment of problem behavior exhibited by older children and adults with IDD. This was theory-informed, problem-driven work on issues presented by clients in a variety of settings (e.g., home, school, work, community). Since arriving at KU, my research opportunities have grown. I supervise the Sunnyside Toddler Program and the Little Steps Early Intervention Program. Sunnyside is an inclusive early childcare program for children ages 12-30 months. Little Steps is an early intensive behavioral intervention program for children (ages 2.5-7 years) diagnosed with IDD who display severe learning deficits and behavior disorders. This is a program that I created, in collaboration with my colleague Professor Claudia Dozier, in 2010. These settings have enabled me (and my graduate students) to develop a systematic program of research in early childhood education and intervention. My current projects include: childhood obesity prevention (increasing healthy food choices and exercise in children), toileting training, functional analysis and treatment of childhood problem behavior (aggression, feeding disorders, self-injury, etc.), increasing child compliance with healthcare routines, and reinforcer efficacy and preference.
